Tetto Verde

The vision of ‘Tetto Verde’ is to create a number of inspirational Urban ‘Roof’ gardens (at high and low level) through collaboration of students, communities and charities working together to transform unused areas of land for community benefit across Wales. This will include increasing biodiversity through use of native plants, wildflowers and vegetables which will benefit pollinators through habitat connectivity, by providing the community with projects and contribute towards research. We want to inspire interest in green spaces by turning unsightly, drab areas into visually stimulating green space of tranquillity that provide rewarding activities as well as benefiting pollinators and wildlife in the urban environment.

We are working with partners who are able to facilitate mass engagement of local people from students, the community, and individuals that suffer mental health issues. Following a series of workshops we have identified a desire from all partners to learn new skills through ‘Tetto Verde’.  We are currently developing sites at Neath Port Talbot MIND, Cardiff University, Bridgend College and Coleg Y Cymoedd.  Our project transform these areas by providing hardy pollinator friendly flowers as well as vegetables that will benefit birds, bees, butterflies and other insects.

The project will include:

  • Developing new sites –  Coleg Y Cymoedd, Cardiff University and Neath Port Talbot MIND.
  • Introducing conservation management techniques through training and hands on activity.
  • Developing a modern vision for managing property/land which recognises the many services that green spaces provide for the community, particularly the need to promote habitats for pollinators and biodiversity.
  • Practical engagement and knowledge transfer from the academic sector to benefit communities and charities.
  • New partnerships that will deliver Welsh Government policy objectives under the themes of well-being, health and biodiversity resilience.
  • Action research on the role of communities in practical action and monitoring.
